Otway Rainforest Sites of Significance


As the name suggests Rainforest Sites of Significance (RSOS) are areas that contain significant rainforest. Each area is classed as being of National, State or Regional significance.

There are ten RSOS in the Otways.

1. RSOS Government Process
The State and federal governments have been involved in identifying and classifying RSOS across the state.

2. RSOS located in Otway State forest are not protected
Four RSOS located in state forest are not protected from logging.

3. RSOS threaten ash sawlog supply
Issues surrounding RSOS are ignored by forestry so logging can proceed.

4. Forestry Victoria ignores Code of Forest Practices rainforest buffer prescriptions
The requirement within the Code to protect national RSOS from logging is being ignored.

5. Forestry Victoria ignore key scientific advice

  • Forestry ignores the advice from the Flora & Fauna Unit (Cameron) when developing the Otway Forest Management Plan.Link

  • Forestry ignores advice from independent expert(Burgman) regarding the need to reduced levels of logging to protect RSOS.Link

6. Forestry Victoria suppresses RSOS reports and maps
Three key reports have still not been made publicly available. Maps of RSOS have never been publicly released.

7. Forestry Victoria misuses typo error in report to downgrade RSOS
The Aire - Youngs creek RSOS has been dubiously downgraded by Forestry Victoria.
