Forestry Victoria misuses typo error in report to downgrade RSOS

In 1999 report titled, "Rainforests and Cool Temperate Forests of Victoria" provided results of a state-wide review of rainforest Sites of Significance.

The results of the review show that the Redwater RSOS is the only area in the Otways to have its status changed. This was an upgraded from Regional to State significance. This result is provided in the Discussion (Table 20) and Recommendations (Table 21).

However there is a typo in Appendix 8 that downgrades the Aire - Youngs Creek Rainforest Sight of Significance (SOS) from National to State significance.

As a consequence, Forestry Victoria use this typo to argue that the Aire - Youngs Creek RSOS is of state significance not national. However this conclusion by Forestry Victoria is not backed up by the discussion, results and recommendations of the report.

The Author of the report Bill Peel has been contacted regarding the issue of a typo. Peel openly admits that there is a mistake in the Appendix 8 and that Aire-Youngs Creek are is still an area of national significance.

The significance of the interpretation is important given that the Code of Forest Practices requires no logging in RSOS of national significance.
