The Battle for Bannockburn
1314
When Scottish forces under Robert Bruce threaten English held castles
of Berwick and Stirling, Edward II led an army of 15,000 including
2,000 horse, north to attack the Scots. Bruce deployed 8,000 men
and defeated the British as the crossed a river. For the loss of
4,000 men, the Scots had ended immediate English hopes of conquering
their land.
1997
When Environmentalists threaten to save ancient Yellow Gum forest
held by Barwon Water, Barwon water led a force of 80 police including
28 vehicles, west to assail the environmentalists. The environmentalists
deployed 40 people and defeated Barwon Water as they cleared the
Yellow Gum forests. For 3 weeks of bruising protests with police
and security guards and the loss of 8 ha of ancient forests, the
environmentalists had ended Barwon Water's immediate hopes of destroying
the land.
