1993 Auditor General's findings on logging issue The woodchip debate has been clouded by the absence of clear definitions of what ‘sawlog driven’ actually means. In May 1993 the Auditor General’s Report investigated the Department of Natural Resources and Environment’s (DNRE) compliance to the 1986 Timber Industry Strategy. In a section titled Dominance of Sawlog Production (page 103, 104), audit found 5.114 "a detailed definition and interpretation of the sawlog-driven concept has not been formally adopted by the department" 5.117 "In audit opinion, there is a need for the Department to formalise its policy in relation to a sawlog-driven industry and to establish a long-term marketing plan for the end use of timber produced as a result of its current practices."
