The 1992 Otway Forest Management Plan (OFMP) limits Residual (woodchip) logs to 60,000 tonnes per annum. In June 1992 the Otway Forest Management Plan was released after extensive public consultation. Section 7.1.2 gives High Priority to allow up to 60,000 tonnes/annum of Residual trees to be used for woodchips from the Otways. The Otway Forest Management Plan offers a "trust the management" assurance that logging will be sawlog driven "The Government has unequivocally rejected a woodchip-driven industry in native forests but strongly supports a genuine waste utilisation operation. It considers that adequate measures can be, and to a large extent have been, put in place to allay these fears." "Sawlog-driven timber management in forest available and suitable for sawlog production occurs when harvesting and regeneration is directed primarily towards producing a sustainable supply of sawlogs. Lower grade hardwood logs will be produced as a by-product of this management." Source: Otway Forest Management Plan, June 1992. Page 58 and 60. |
