CLEARFELLING NATIVE FOREST IN THE WEST BARWON DAM CATCHMENT FOR WOODCHIPS

The last portion of a 30 hectare coupe was felled in April 1998. The trees in this forest were found to be unsuitable even for woodchips and were left to be burnt. Dozens of habitat trees, along with 500 year old tree ferns and other native species were destroyed to provide space for hardwood 'regeneration'. The likes of these plantations in the immediate area are a dismal failure.
