Proposed future logging within RSOS

Logging in RSOS

Forestry Victoria are targeting logging within RSOS over the next three years. As many ash trees as possible will be clearfell logged before a scheduled revision of the Otway Forest Management Plan (OFMP) is completed. The OFMP, already outdated, was due for revision by June 2002. However the West RFA has allowed the State government until June 2005 to review the plan.

When the OFMP is revised, the last decade of accumulated knowledge and outstanding issues relating to rainforest management will have to be dealt with. A detailed strategy to manage rainforest as required by the 1996 code will need to be formulated. The risk for Forestry Victoria is the review is likely to result in a reduction in area available for ash sawlog as predicated by in the 1995 report Rainforest in Victoira.
